You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:14-16)
It’s been nearly three years since Thomas Friedman released his book, The World is Flat, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve become convinced that the phrase “flat world” is going to be part of our business vernacular for quite a while. For those of you who may have been spared that catchy little phrase, it refers to how 21st century globalization has connected previously remote parts of the Earth and created a level playing field in the worldwide marketplace.
In keeping with this week’s theme of posts inspired by Christian songs, today’s video looks at our flat world through a little different lens. He Reigns by the Newsboys is a song about Christians worshiping our Lord across continents, transcending languages and cultures.
Today, Christians working in the Corporate America truly are working in the corporate world. Most of us, if we haven’t already, will begin to interact much more with employees, customers, partners and vendors working in other countries. For me, this started years ago when I was in my employee orientation training with a dozen employees from all over the world and thanks to social networking sites like Facebook, those relationships continue to expand.
Personally, I’ve delighted in making new friends in my company’s overseas offices. I am sometimes reminded though that many in other regions of the world take a curious eye towards us Yankees – particularly our politics and religion. In many countries, Americans are seen as overtly religious cowboys, particularly in Japan and across Western Europe.
What a unique opportunity it is then to be able to extend the values that we as Chrsitians hold dear – loving others, making choices of integrity, having a strong work ethic, etc. – into our new relationships. Our Flat World presents us with new opportunities to be the light of the world, that city on a hill that extends a glimpse of the Lord’s grace to others as we become more integrated into their world and their lives.
